Québec around 1980

Montreal and its skyscrapers

Montreal is the metropolis of Quebec. Many sectors of the economy are found in Montreal. For example, financial services, scientific research, health care, engineering, and tourism. Starting in the 1960s, the downtown area developed at an impressive rate. A business district grew with the construction of numerous office towers where service companies were located. For example, Place Ville-Marie was built in 1962. It has 42 floors and welcomes 10,000 employees every day. These buildings are built near older buildings like churches and old factories.

Skyscrapers are becoming more and more numerous in the downtown area. However, there is a metropolitan regulation that forbids skyscrapers to be higher than Mount Royal. Finally, in the 1960s, the metro and the commuter train arrived in Montreal. Many workers began using these forms of public transportation to get to downtown Montreal.
