Mi’kmaq around 1980

Living far from urban centers

The Mi’kmaq who live in Gaspé live far from Quebec’s major urban centers.  For example, Maria is 807 km from Montreal. There are different ways of getting to the three villages where the Mi’kmaq live: by car or by bus, train or plane

Route 132, which circles the Gaspé along its coast, runs through Gaspé, Maria and Restigouche. The distance between the villages of Restigouche and Gaspé is 320 km. In the 1960s, just like Quebeckers, there were more and more Mi’kmaq buying cars and trucks. Through these means of transportation, members of the three communities met more frequently and developed closer ties

The Village of Restigouche and the City of Campbellton are connected by a busy bridge which crosses the Restigouche River. The Mi’kmaq who live in Restigouche follow New Brunswick time: When it’s 10 o’clock in Restigouche, it’s only 9 o’clock in Quebec

Planes land in Gaspé and Bonaventure; the train stops in Carleton and Campbellton (New Brunswick). Freight to Gaspé is shipped by truck containers. In winter, it is often difficult to travel, so snowmobiles are very much used for transportation.
