A decision-making role-play: The functioning of the parliament around 1820

This short game is to help everyone better understand how parliament worked in 1820.

After reading about the structure of the parliamentary system around 1820, randomly distribute a role card to each student. Then, present the students with one of the three scenarios from the slide deck.

Encourage the students to reflect on what they learned about the parliamentary system and the order in which people can express their voices.

Steps for teachers

  1. Hand out the role cards to your students
  2. Read a scenario to the class
  3. Ask students to think about “what would someone in your position want?”
  4. The People speak first – They tell the Assembly member what they want
  5. Legislative Assembly debates – Discusses and vote on a proposal
  6. If the bill passes, it goes to the Legislative Council for approval
  7. Legislative Council debates- They can approve, reject, or modify the bill
  8. If approved, the bill goes to the Governor for final decision
  9. The Governor says yes or no- Signs it into law or rejects the bill completely
  10. Executive Council enforces – If it becomes law, they make sure it’s followed
