Many people in Quebec today are probably familiar with patrilineal societies, like those from Europe, where lineage tends to be related to the male figure. However, many societies are matrilineal, with family lineage linked to a person’s mother. In matrilineal societies, women are often involved in the decision-making process and politics. Some of the more well-known matrilineal societies are the Lenape, Hopi and Iroquois.
