1749, Pehr Kalm, Swedish naturalist:

“On Friday and Saturday, people refrain from eating meat, following the rules of the Roman Catholic Church, but that does not mean one has to starve. On that day, people boil all kinds of culinary herbs and fruits; serve milk, fish, and eggs prepared in various ways. Sliced cucumbers with cream is an excellent dish. […] Melon grows in abundance here and is always served with sugar, but not wine or brandy.”
