1749, Pehr Kalm, Swedish naturalist:
“In some respects, meals are not the same in Canada as in the English provinces. This may be due to differences in customs, tastes and religion between the two nations. Here, there are three meals a day: breakfast, dinner and supper. Breakfast is usually taken between seven and eight o’clock. People are early risers in this country, starting with the Governor General, who grants audiences at seven o’clock, upon getting up. Some are content with a piece of bread soaked in eau-de-vie (brandy), while others begin with a small glass and eat a piece of bread afterwards, or drink a cup of chocolate. Many ladies drink coffee. Many do not eat until noon. […]”
