Television, radio, newspapers
The Mi’kmaq had access to the same means of communication (telephone, mail, and fax) and telecommunications (radio and television) as elsewhere in Quebec. Most of them had telephone and television. They could watch the same programs as the rest of Quebeckers. Raynold Gideon, Mi’kmaq from Maria, earned a Masters in Drama, and became a famous Hollywood screenwriter. He wrote the screenplay for the film Stand by Me for which he won the Oscar for Best Screenplay in 1987. He also wrote the screenplays for Made in Heaven and Jungle 2 Jungle.
The Mi’kmaq could also listen to different radio stations in Quebec. However, Community Radio Maria, founded in 1987, was very important for them. It broadcasts local news and programs on Mi’kmaq culture.
The Mi’kmaq could get the same newspapers as elsewhere in Quebec. However, they also had their own publications. The Micmac News, established in 1969, addresses issues concerning Mi’kmaq communities. The Mi’gmawei Mawiomi Secretariat has also published a magazine since 2001.
